What is Brothers about?
The series follows Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Their lifelong friendship is thrown into chaos when they uncover a decades-old secret suggesting that they might actually be brothers. The story begins after Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart. Woody and his family head to Matthew’s ranch in Austin, where what initially appears to be a temporary escape becomes the starting point for a much bigger family mystery.
Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally reveals the secret that sends Woody searching for answers. At the same time, Matthew is dealing with another major question surrounding his future, including the possibility of a run for governor of Texas.

What is the premise behind the family mystery?
The central mystery comes from the possibility that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s fictionalized characters may be biologically related. The idea draws on a real-life story that has been publicly discussed by the two actors. The series turns that unusual possibility into a fictional comedy rather than presenting it as a documentary account.
That distinction matters: Brothers is a scripted comedy, and McConaughey and Harrelson are playing fictionalized versions of themselves.
What kind of show is Brothers?
Apple categorizes Brothers as a comedy. The show’s premise combines family mystery, celebrity personas and friendship with a conventional scripted comedy structure. Its story is built around the disruption caused by the possible family connection, while the characters also deal with relationships, family responsibilities and Matthew’s political ambitions.
Is Brothers a true story?
No. Brothers is a scripted comedy in which Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves. The premise was inspired by the real-life public speculation around whether the two actors could be biologically related, but the television series fictionalizes that idea into its own story.
