Why the setup works as a comedy premise
An unwanted marriage already creates an obvious source of conflict. But the more useful dramatic element is what happens after the escape. The couple cannot simply leave the situation behind. Their families are involved. Expectations are involved. And a confession has changed what everyone thought the marriage was about.
That gives the story room to move between romance, family comedy and embarrassment.
